欽欽Tchin Tchin | 台南咖啡店 | Coffee Shop in Tainan

Tucked away inside Tainan’s Shuixian Temple Market is a little coffee shop run by just one person, so well hidden that we needed Google Maps to find it. Before our first trip to Tainan a few years ago, I was looking up coffee shops online when I stumbled across this one inside a market. The reviews described the owner as chatty and witty.

The market is dimly lit in the afternoon, as most stalls close around noon, leaving only a handful of vegetable sellers still doing business. We wove our way past dried seafood shops and vegetable stalls, turning this way and that. Looking at all the closed stalls around us, it was hard to imagine that a coffee shop could still be open somewhere inside. But a little further ahead, there was another section to the left, with a faint light glowing a short distance away. There it was: Tchin Tchin.

The owner is quite young. After graduating from university, he worked at a coffee shop in Taipei before opening this tiny place in Tainan. On our first visit, there happened to be no other customers, and we chatted for nearly two hours about everything from coffee beans to Kinmen kaoliang liquor, and from everyday life to Taiwanese politics. We only reluctantly tore ourselves away because we had a flight to catch. Another visit happened to fall on election day in Taiwan, and he even invited us to watch the vote count with him.

The coffee is, of course, delicious. I usually order a pour-over or an iced Americano. Pictured below is the “Iced High-Speed Rail” I ordered a few years ago—an iced latte with kaoliang liquor, which had a wonderfully intriguing flavour. Simply weaving through the market stalls to find TCHIN TCHIN is an experience in itself. Sitting down for a coffee and a chat with the owner adds another layer to the experience.
